Sumi ink is is used in traditional Japanese caligraphy and art against a white background. Sumi is made from the soot of pine branches from trees found on the mountainsides close to Nara and Suzuka prized for the quality of its ink. The "ink' , derived from the most natural of materials, has a rich spectrum of tones which the artist learns to work with.
Tokushima indigo is protected under Japanese law as a national treasure and only a handful of craftsmen and women are certified to work with it. Dyeing by hand is a slow and laborious process but the results are exquisite as the indigo penetrates the core of the cotton yarns as they are repeatedly dipped into the vats of indigo.
If any brand were to produce a denim that draws on this rich Japanese tradition it was always going to be Pure Blue Japan. This is pure denim artistry - the warp yarns are dyed using natural indigo and the weft is sumi ink dyed. All done by hand.
